Piclits and Poetry! March 29, 2010

Piclits is a fun website that kids can use to get poetic inspiration from photographs!  Here’s a little something I came up with….http://www.piclits.com/viewpoem.aspx?PoemId=38882

I’m hoping to be able to use this site with my class, if it’s approved to be unblocked on our school computers.

Happy Writing!

Book sharing activity October 4, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — jenucdavis @ 5:42 pm

One of my goals this year as a reading teacher is to really focus on broadening my students’ knowledge of the abundance of books out there that they have to choose from. Not that Twilight and Harry Potter are a bad thing, but there is so much more available for them to read! Last month, I opened up the school year with an activity that required the kids to make a book jacket for their favorite book. I kept the requirements simple, so that I could use this project as a tool to gauge not only their book tastes, but also their work habits. My students completed the activity in class. On the day that it was due, I placed the kids in groups of four so that they could share their favorite book with their small group. Before meeting with their groups, we created a list of possible questions the kids might ask each other about their books, which really made their conversations more meaningful.
Overall, I felt like this project was a great way to kick off book sharing in class. After the groups met, I noticed a few students adding books that interested them to their “Books to Read” lists that they keep in their reading response journals.
I’ve added a few pictures below of some of the book jackets…

My first blog! October 1, 2009

Hi there, everyone!  Thanks for stopping by my new blog site, “Hunting for Treasure”.  My title was inspired by the genius Walt Disney, who once said, “There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island.”

My goal is to use this blog as a way of contributing to the Web 2.0 culture that has been such a tremendous resource in my own teaching.  Here on “Hunting for Treasure” I plan to share my thoughts on both young adult books and professional resources I’m currently reading, as well as teaching strategies I have found to be a success in my classroom. My hope is that you will find something of use that will help you in your teaching endeavors.

Please visit often!
